SUNDAY EXPRESS MAY 28 Study finds MMR is linked with autism. Scientists have confirmed the controversial link between MMR and autism. The findings corroborate research by Dr Andrew Wakefield, discredited by the Department of Health for suggesting the combined measles, mumps and rubella jab may have contributed to rises in the disorder. The new study, led by Dr Arthur Krigsman, a child gastroenterologist from New York University School of Medicine, has led to calls for an immediate overhaul of Britain's child vaccination programme.
Scientists fear MMR link to autism New American research shows that there could be a link between the controversial MMR triple vaccine and autism and bowel disease in children. The study appears to confirm the findings of British doctor Andrew Wakefield, who caused a storm in 1998 by suggesting a possible link. Now a team from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in North Carolina are examining 275 children with regressive autism and bowel disease - and of the 82 tested so far, 70 prove positive for the measles virus. ARTICLES ON ATTACK ON ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE by MARTIN WALKER Every time there is an attack on alternative medicine people write similar letters in response, defending these therapies but always, there is a lack of analysis, historical or otherwise. This means that although the number of replies and combative responses is growing and we are 'learning' in that sense, no one seems to be describing the supporters of orthodox medicine in their context and drawing attention to conflict of interest and vested interest. Consequently it always looks as if these critics are serious people with important things to say, rather than shallow half wits guided entirely by vested interest. Dr Michael Baum was a founder member of the Campaign Against Health Fraud (now called HealthWatch http://www.healthwatch-uk.org/committee.html ). Steering Into a Third Intifada When there is no solution, there is no problem, observed James Burnham, the former Trotskyite turned Cold War geostrategist. Burnham's insight came again to mind as President Bush ended his meeting with Ehud Olmert by announcing that the Israeli prime minister had brought with him some "bold ideas" for peace. And what bold ideas might that be? Olmert wants Bush to remain steadfast in refusing to talk to the Hamas-dominated Palestinian Authority. He wants U. S. support for Israel's wall that is fencing in large slices of the West Bank and all of Jerusalem, forever denying the Palestinians a viable state. He wants U. S. recognition of Israeli-drawn lines as the final borders of Israel. And he wants America to remove the "existential threat" of Iran. In the six months before he proceeds unilaterally with this Sharon-Olmert plan, he will be happy to talk with Mahmoud Abbas, the isolated Palestinian president he has called "powerless." What is the Bush plan to advance our interests in the Middle East? There is none. For five years, the Bush policy has been to sign off on whatever Sharon put in front of him. And now that Bush is weak, he is not going to pick a fight he cannot win and, in candor, he does not want. For Bush has signed on to the Sharon agenda. Alleged AIPAC informant promoted The Bush administration promoted David Satterfield, an alleged informant for a former AIPAC lobbyist facing trial in a classified information case. The State Department last week announced Satterfield's promotion to senior adviser on Iraq to Condoleezza Rice, the secretary of state. Satterfield was promoted from deputy ambassador to Baghdad. Satterfield is cited in the indictment against Steve Rosen, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee's former foreign policy director, and Keith Weissman, its former Iran analyst, as one of three government officials who shared information with Rosen. Satterfield is described as meeting with Rosen in 2002, when Satterfield was second in command at the State Department's Near East desk. Cannes Premiere Gets Standing Ovation Aaron Russo’s AMERICA: FREEDOM TO FASCISM To Open Across America July 28 CANNES, FRANCE Aaron Russo’s incendiary political documentary which exposes many of the governmental organizations and entities that have abridged the freedoms of U. S. citizens had its international premiere at Cannes and won a standing ovation. The event, which was held on the beach and filled to capacity, was open to the public and drew a crowd of people who stood along the boardwalk to watch the film. Through interviews with U. S. Congressmen, as well the former IRS Commissioner, former IRS and FBI agents, tax attorneys and authors, Russo proves conclusively that there is no law requiring citizens to pay a direct tax on their labor. His film connects the dots between money creation, federal income tax, voter fraud, the national identity card (which becomes law in May 2008) and the implementation of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to track citizens. COMPANY PUSHES RFID IMPLANTS FOR IMMIGRANTS, GUEST WORKERS Scott Silverman, Chairman of the Board of VeriChip Corporation, has alarmed civil libertarians by promoting the company's subcutaneous human tracking device as a way to identify immigrants and guest workers. He appeared on the Fox News Channel earlier this week, the morning after President Bush called for high-tech measures to clamp down on Mexican immigrants. Privacy advocates Katherine Albrecht and Liz McIntyre are warning that a government-sanctioned chipping program such as that suggested by Silverman could quickly be expanded to include U. S. citizens, as well. The VeriChip is a glass encapsulated Radio Frequency Identification tag that is injected into the flesh to uniquely number and identify people. The tag can be read silently and invisibly by radio waves from up to a foot or more away, right through clothing. The highly controversial device is also being marketed as a way to access secure areas, link to medical records, and serve as a payment device when associated with a credit card. "Makers of VeriChip have been planning for this day. Members of the Tribe / Thriving in China In a controversial appearance at the recent American Jewish Committee centennial convention in Washington, author A. B. Yehoshua predicted that Diaspora Jews would move to China if it were to become a world power. Dr. Avrum Ehrlich, a professor at the Center for Judaic and Inter-Religious Studies at the University of Shandong, says that this process is actually already under way. "The Jewish community in Hong Kong is thriving," he explains, "and there are at least 3,000 Jews now living permanently in Beijing alone."... ...Ehrlich says he regrets the fact that current relations between Israel and China are limited to the military and economic spheres, without any significant cultural dialogue. Among the many Israeli and Jewish businesspeople he has encountered recently in China, he says, are ultra-Orthodox kashrut supervisors. "It appears that the whole kashrut industry, the manufacturing of chemicals and raw materials, has moved to China," he explains. "I was offered a full professorship right after I finished," he says proudly. The unexpected move to China was not so drastic in light of Ehrlich's somewhat chaotic life beforehand: He immigrated to Israel at the age of 16, studied at four different yeshivas and was ordained a rabbi at the Tomchei Tmimim yeshiva in Kfar Chabad. Later he altered his course in life and studied at the pluralistic Shalom Hartman Institute and at Bar-Ilan University. He finished his doctorate, on Hasidic leaders, at the University of Sydney. "I found there's great disempowerment in Israel," he explains. "That's why I looked for a place where I could make a difference." The center in Shandong was established 10 years ago by one of the local professors. According to Ehrlich, in 2004 the center was given a mandate by the Chinese government to set up a curriculum for Jewish studies in China. "It means bringing scholars from all over the world, translating all the Jewish classics and organizing seminars and other activities," he says. Ehrlich made up a list of 25 Jewish classics for translation, including the Mishna, the Kuzari and the Zohar, as well as writings of such notables as Maimonides, Herman Cohen, Rabbi Kook, Ahad Ha'am and Rabbi Mordechai Kaplan. He smiles when asked about the quality of the work, which was done by local students... ...At least eight of China's 300 universities are now offering courses in Jewish studies. Ehrlich estimates about 100 students nationwide study Hebrew each year in comparison to five a year in the 1990s. He says the Chinese see studying the Jews as essential to understanding the underpinnings of Western thinking. "They see the Jews as mavericks of Western thinking and ideology," he says. But the strongest driving force behind the interest in Jews is not cultural or intellectual, he says, and he noticed it when he first came to China, while looking at the books on the airport book stands. "I saw many books with titles like 'How to be a Jewish millionaire.' I later understood that when most Chinese speak about 'Jewish wisdom,' they mean what they see as the phenomenal Jewish prowess in making money. World Council of Churches slams Israel Israel bears the burden of responsibility for the present crisis in the Middle East, the World Council of Churches has announced, following a meeting of its Executive Committee in Geneva from May 16-19. The Christian Left's leading ecumenical organization stated Israel's actions towards the Palestinians "cannot be justified morally, legally or even politically." New Scientist 27.5.06 "HEAVY METALS MAY BE IMPLICATED IN AUTISM" Urine samples from 100s of French children showed evidence for a link between autism & exposure to heavy metals. Abnormal, high proteins called porphyrins were found. Richard Lathe of Pieta Research in Edinburgh said "It's highly likely heavy metals are responsible for childhood autism in a majority of cases." This will appear in "Toxicoogy & Applied Pharmacology. (Could be lead or mercury fillings in the mother perhaps?)
Guardian 25.5.06 "CELLS ON A CHIP TO CUT ANIMAL TESTS" Scientists are recreating the human body on a microchip using clumps of cells from different human organs linked by fluid-filled channels. This could cut animal tests. It measures the body's physiology including how each organ reacts to drugs & other chemicals. The work is by Michael Schuler at Cornell Uni, New York.
United States looks on as China mines Latin America's riches A succession of high-level visits to Latin America, particularly in the past five years, demonstrates Beijing's economic commitment to the region. LONG considered the backyard of the United States, Latin America is increasingly falling under the spell of a rising new global power half a world away. Hungry for raw materials to feed its economic boom, China is gobbling up virtually everything it can get its hands on in Latin America, from oil and copper to soya beans and sugar. "We used to say 'the Russians are coming'. We will now need to admit the Chinese have arrived," says Manuel Rocha, a retired ambassador to the United States and now head of the Globis Group, a Miami-based business development company. In the past five years China's trade with Latin America has grown at an annual rate of 42 per cent, reaching nearly $22 billion (£12 billion) last year. 9/11 Commission Report is a Lie The 9/11 Commission's conclusions and recommendations should be totally rejected. Its story is full of lies, distortions and omissions of fact. Following are two of the more than 40 reasons why the official story about what happened on 9/11 is untrue. First, who were the hijackers? None of those named appear on any of the passenger lists released by the airlines. Six of the men named by the government are still alive. We know that because European media have interviewed them. In his book, "The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions," Dr. David Ray Griffin documents all that and concludes the whole report is one long lie. Second, in the months after 9/11 all of the surviving New York City Fire Department personnel who were on the scene were interviewed. Those oral histories were recorded and withheld from the public until Aug. 15, 2005. Only after losing in court three times did the city of New York finally release them. All 503 are now posted on The New York Times Web site. Why did the city fight so hard to keep them from the public? NHS told to abandon alternative medicine Top doctors say money should go to conventional treatment. A GROUP of Britain’s leading doctors has urged every NHS trust to stop paying for alternative medicine and to use the money for conventional treatments. Their appeal is a direct challenge to the Prince of Wales’s outspoken campaign to widen access to complementary therapies. Public funding of “unproven or disproved treatments” such as homoeopathy and reflexology, which are promoted by the Prince, is unacceptable while huge NHS deficits are forcing trusts to sack nurses and limit access to life-saving drugs, the doctors say. The 13 scientists, who include some of the most eminent names in British medicine, have written to the chief executives of all 476 acute and primary care trusts to demand that only evidence-based therapies are provided free to patients. Letters Independent from Pat Rattigan ND: I see that the medical orthodoxy have been having another go at what they call "alternative medicine." In 1950, the cost of the NHS was around £350 million, annually; the inflationary equivalent of this, today, is about £6.5 billion; around one twelfth of the £76 billion that the national disease moneypit is now swallowing. The NHS is now the third largest employer in the world; behind the Indian State Railway and the Chinese Army. The NHS founding-politicians genuinely believed that the cost of the NHS would decline : the public would became healthier as they were increasingly exposed to the rapidly-emerging wonders of modern medicine. According to the Office for National Statistics - Living in Britain survey, 2004, 1 in 6 children under-5 now suffer from a long-standing illness, compared with one in 25 in 1972 : chronic conditions have increased among 5 to 15-year-olds, from 1 in 12, 30 years ago to 1 in 5 in 2002 : a quarter of people aged 16 to 44 now suffer from a long-term illness. Half the adult population are chronically sick. Birth defects rose by 50% in the 5 years to 2002. Stillbirths and first-week deaths have risen to over 5,300 per year. 40% - and rising of the population have, or will develop, cancer: the WHO expects this to double by 2020. At the last count, over ten years ago, we had over 30,000 new diseases. We have now passed the one billion prescriptions-per-year mark , with 22 million people on repeat prescriptions ... You would think, would you not, that those responsible : the anti-pathic practitioners ; the most disastrously unsuccessful group of tradesmen in history, would have the common sense ; the common decency, to simply keep the heads down, keep their mouths shut and keep taking the money.

Vitamins under attack again Yet another in a long line of "reports" hitting the headlines.. we should be used to them by now! Herbal remedies and natural supplements have an outstanding safety record, yet pharmaceuticals cause tens of thousands of hospital admissions in the UK alone every single year. This report once again tows the line of EU and Codex legislation. The Institute of Medicine claims to be impartial stating on their website "Committees are carefully composed to assure the requisite expertise and to avoid bias or conflict of interest", they then go on to say "The majority of our studies and other activities are requested and funded by the federal government. Private industry, foundations, and state and local governments also initiate studies, as does the IOM itself"... need we say more! The Institute of Medicine are calling for "urgent research"; it is likely that a considerable amount of money will be put into studies debunking natural products in the coming years, and there is little question where the funding for this will come from. We can be absolutely sure that the statistics will be manipulated. Conversely, there will remain a lack of funding into clinical trials for vitamins and supplements because the only people who stand to gain is us, and those set to lose out... Big Pharma of course. Common painkillers increase risk of heart failure A team from the The Spanish Centre for Pharmacoepidemiological Studies in Madrid have reported in Heart that NSAIDS can increase the risk of heart failure by as much as a third. The report used information from the UK General Practice Research Database. NSAIDs are widely prescribed and include ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, indomethacin and meloxicam, indomethacin showed the greatest risk, tripling the chance of hospital admission with heart failure. China's share of World Industrial production surges by 156 percent Britain's share of the world's manufacturing has fallen from 3.8 per cent to 3 per cent in the past decade, according to the Vienna-based United Nations Industrial Development Organisation. Over this period global manufacturing output has expanded 34 per cent, from $5,772bn to $7,747bn (£4,127bn), while UK production has risen by only 6 per cent. Britain's much slower rate of growth graphically illustrates why the country's share of manufacturing value-added output measured in constant 1995 prices has declined. The UK's performance has been significantly worse than that of the US - which has kept its share of global manufacturing value-added output roughly constant in this period at just over 20 per cent. Japan, the second biggest manufacturer after the US, increased manufacturing output over the decade by 12.6 per cent. However, since this was lower than the overall gain in global production, its share of the total dropped to 17.7 per cent from 21.1 per cent in 1995. New Italian Government Less Friendly to Israel Massimo d'Alema, who once referred to Israel as a "terror state," was sworn in last week as Italy's foreign minister and deputy prime minister, along with the rest of Prime Minister Romano Prodi's new cabinet. In France, Six Month Prison Sentence for 'Holocaust' Skeptic Georges Theil, a former elected representative, must serve six months in prison, and pay a fine of 10,000 euros, for skeptical remarks he made during an October 2004 interview about gas chamber killings during World War II, an appeals court in Lyon, France, has ruled. Theil is the first person to be given a prison sentence on the basis of France's 1990 "Gayssot law," which criminalizes remarks that "dispute crimes against humanity." Earlier victims of the law, which is used against "Holocaust deniers," have been punished with fines. Israelis to sue Ahmadinejad for plotting to commit genocide A group of lawmakers and former Israeli diplomats plan to sue Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, accusing him of conspiring to commit genocide, one of those involved said Monday. Ahmadinejad recently said Israel should be wiped off the map and dismissed the Nazi Holocaust as a "myth." Dore Gold, a former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, said Ahmadinejad's comments violate the 1948 U. N. Genocide Convention, to which Iran is a signatory. "From our preliminary assessment, there's no question that Ahmadinejad violated the genocide convention, which specifically addresses the issue of incitement to genocide," Gold said. Criminal records mix-up uncovered Some 2,700 people have been wrongly labelled as criminals by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB), it has emerged. The mistakes have led to some people being turned down for jobs. Metro 19.5.06 "NUCLEAR PLANTS IN 57 SAFETY SCARES" A string of safety incidents at nuclear power plants was exposed yesterday. 57 lapses were reported to the Health & Safety Exec. over the past 10 years. Eleven were classified as "serious", including a leak of 83,000 litres of radioactive waste at Sellafield. Others include radioactive material spills at Hunterston B in Ayeshire in 2001 & at Bradwell, Essex in 2004. Others include a fire, machine failure & contamination of ground water & employees clothes.
D. Mail 19.5.06 "YELLOW RIVER" Around 8,000 litres of concentrate, used to make Sunny Delight drink, leaked into a watercourse yesterday. Dozens of fish were found floating on the surface poisoned by the lurid mixture. The spill of "sub-standard" juice was a category 1 pollution incident, caused by a split in an underground fibreglass tank at the Gerber Foods Soft drink factory in Bridgwater, Somerset. Approx. 6 tons of juice & concentrate seeped into a tributary of the River Parett. The drink's name was changed after criticism from nutritionists who claim it contains unhealthy levels of sugar & additives.

The trials, when linked with other data, revealed a danger that children could suffer convulsions and even run the risk of brain damage. This is devastating news for parents. Some health campaigners warn that the combination of five powerful vaccines administered in this way overwhelms a baby's immune system. Failure to prove a claim does not automatically make it false, but caution is called for, especially in the case of a world-changing event like the alleged terror attacks of September 11, 2001. The Bush administration has provided no public evidence to support its claim that the terror attacks were the work of Muslim extremists or even that the aircraft that struck their respective targets on September 11 were as advertised. DRUGS: They put thousands in hospital every year More than a quarter of a million people are admitted to UK hospitals every year after suffering a serious reaction to a prescription drug, a new survey has found. The drugs that are most likely to cause a serious reaction are aspirin, diuretics, warfarin, and the NSAIDs (non steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs). The figure is a rough calculation based on the number of people who had been admitted to a group of hospitals with drug reactions over a six-month period in 2004. But the total is probably a gross under-estimate of the damage caused by pharmaceuticals. Hospital doctors are notoriously bad at reporting drug side effects, and so it’s quite possible that many admissions have not been registered as such. The survey also only attempts to measure those reactions that required hospital care. Many, many others suffer at home – and may not even know that the drug is to blame. The heart of the problem is the way that drug adverse reactions are captured. Doctors are supposed to report all reactions on a ‘yellow card’ system that was introduced in 1964. Its pioneer, Dr Bill Inman, once told WDDTY that he estimated only 12 to 20 per cent of all reactions are reported. Jews in Poland Wary of Ruling Coalition Jewish groups are warning the new Polish government that the inclusion of two far-right parties in its ruling coalition could hamper Warsaw's effort to rebuild its international image and reconcile with the Jewish community. "This is really a step backwards," said Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, who met with Polish officials on Monday in New York. "Poland worked so hard to address the past and they will now face a serious test." Foxman and Serge Cwajgenbaum, secretary general of the European Jewish Congress, urged the Polish president and the prime minister to ask the leaders of the two parties to condemn antisemitism. "If there are further antisemitic or xenophobic comments, we will then consider calling for European Union sanctions, but for now, we are waiting to see what happens," Cwajgenbaun said.
Aipac Case Impacting Security Clearance The Pentagon is invoking the prosecution of two pro-Israel lobbyists and a Defense Department analyst for illegal use of classified information as a basis for stripping security clearances from government contractor employees who have dual citizenship in America and Israel or family members living in the Jewish state. In at least three instances, Defense Department attorneys have used or attempted to use the case involving the former staffers of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee to justify withdrawing a security clearance or denying one in the first place, according to a Virginia lawyer who closely tracks such disputes, Sheldon Cohen. "In my personal experience, I know of at least three cases," Mr. Cohen told The New York Sun yesterday. "I assume they're raising it in every Israel case." Asked why government lawyers were invoking the Aipac case in security clearance disputes with no known connection to the pro-Israel group, Mr. Cohen said, "The only reason to possibly use it is to implicate anybody with a connection to Israel, to imply they cannot be trusted. There is no other conceivable reason to bring it up."
Simpson's 'Nazi past' led to abdication Newly released FBI files suggest the alleged Nazi connections of Wallis Simpson prevented her marrying King Edward while he was monarch. The revelations are contrary to the long-held belief that the stumbling block was the American's status as a divorcee. King Edward abdicated the throne in December 1936, following a constitutional crisis, and married her in exile the following year. These FBI files were written in the 1940s but are now released under America's Freedom of Information Act. They suggest stronger connections between the Duchess of Windsor - as she was known after marriage - and the Germans than previously believed. The documents are a combination of surveillance, informants and hearsay. One memo said that the British Government, headed by Stanley Baldwin, had known for some time that the Duchess was exceedingly pro-German in her sympathies. The FBI believed she was considered so obnoxious by the British that they refused to permit Edward to marry her. Reports emerged last year that the FBI also sent agents to spy on the royal couple after allegations that the Duchess might have been passing secrets to a leading Nazi with whom she was thought to have had an affair. Appointment of monitor adds teeth to the fight against anti-Semitism The U. S. State Department just added a set of teeth to its fledgling office monitoring anti-Semitism. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Wednesday named Gregg Rickman, a dogged investigator who has tracked the Swiss banks' role in the Holocaust, as the first special envoy for monitoring and combating anti-Semitism. Jewish leaders unanimously agreed that the appointment would push the office monitoring anti-Semitism, in existence barely 18 months, to the department's front burner. "It creates a strong point person that will be able to coordinate all the different parts of our government that deal with anti-Semitism," said Mark Levin, executive director of NCSJ, a group that advocates for Jews in the former Soviet Union and that lobbied for the position. "Without continued U. S. leadership, I'm not sure how much attention will be paid by our friends in Europe and elsewhere to anti-Semitism."

US Spells Out Plan to Bomb Iran The US is updating contingency plans for a non- nuclear strike to cripple Iran's atomic weapon program if international diplomacy fails, Pentagon sources have confirmed. Strategists are understood to have presented two options for pinpoint strikes using B2 bombers flying directly from bases in Missouri, Guam in the Pacific and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. 'Racist' Marriage Law Upheld by Israel Israel's High Court has narrowly upheld a law denying Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza married to Israeli citizens the right to live in the country with their spouses. The judges voted by six to five not to cancel a four-year-old amendment to the Citizenship Law which outlaws "family unification" in Israel between Palestinians and Arab citizens of Israel. It was passed as a one-year emergency measure in 2002 on the ground that it was needed to protect Israeli security. Venezuela considers fighter jet deal with Iran Venezuela is considering selling its fleet of 21 US-made F-16 fighter jets to another country, perhaps Iran, a Venezuelan military official said today. For the past few weeks a sometimes comic debate has simmering in the American press, focused on the question of whether there is an Israeli lobby, and if so, just how powerful is it? C., 4 May: It is a great honour for me to join you tonight. By the time my Organization was founded, yours had already spent nearly four decades as an advocate for Jewish civil rights, and for human dignity in the broadest sense. The American Jewish Committee was thus one of a small band of non-governmental organizations that were present at the UN’s creation. Your renowned representative, Jacob Blaustein, was one of the most influential figures in that conference. And the institute that bears his name continues to play a vital part in the UN’s human rights work through the engagement of its director, Felice Gaer. In recent years especially, the United Nations and the Jewish community have moved closer together. The United Nations is fully engaged in the struggle against anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination. Last year, in a long overdue observance, the General Assembly held a special session to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camps. And this year, on 27 January, we marked the first of what will now be an annual international day of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust. The United Nations is, I hope and believe, what it always should be -– a place where Jews can feel at home. It is also an Organization within which, more and more, the State of Israel enjoys the same rights and responsibilities as every other member. My good friend Danny Gillerman is now serving as one of the General Assembly’s vice-presidents. And for some years Israel has been participating in one of the Assembly’s regional groups -– the West European and Others Group –- in New York. I hope the same group will soon find ways to include Israel in its deliberations in Geneva and Vienna, too. We should all be pleased about these developments, because our world faces immense challenges. We need the Jewish people -– and especially the American Jewish Committee –- to make its full contribution, on every item on the global agenda... Lord Goldsmith to consider trial over Britons shot dead in Gaza by Jeevan Vasagar, The Guardian May 6, 2006 The attorney general confirmed yesterday he was considering whether to seek the extradition and prosecution of an Israeli soldier who shot dead British cameraman James Miller in Gaza. Mr Miller, 34, was making a documentary when he was killed as he tried to leave a Palestinian house in May 2003. At an inquest in London last month, a jury returned a verdict that he had been murdered. In the chaos of Iraq, one project is on target: a giant US embassy by Daniel McGrory in Baghdad The Times May 03, 2006 The question puzzles and enrages a city: how is it that the Americans cannot keep the electricity running in Baghdad for more than a couple of hours a day, yet still manage to build themselves the biggest embassy on Earth? Irritation grows as residents deprived of air-conditioning and running water three years after the US-led invasion watch the massive US Embassy they call “George W’s palace” rising from the banks of the Tigris. In the pavement cafés, people moan that the structure is bigger than anything Saddam Hussein built. They are not impressed by the architects’ claims that the diplomatic outpost will be visible from space and cover an area that is larger than the Vatican city and big enough to accommodate four Millennium Domes. They are more interested in knowing whether the US State Department paid for the prime real estate or simply took it. While families in the capital suffer electricity cuts, queue all day to fuel their cars and wait for water pipes to be connected, the US mission due to open in June next year will have its own power and water plants to cater for a population the size of a small town. Officially, the design of the compound is supposed to be a secret, but you cannot hide the giant construction cranes and the concrete contours of the 21 buildings that are taking shape. Looming over the skyline, the embassy has the distinction of being the only big US building project in Iraq that is on time and within budget. In a week when Washington revealed a startling list of missed deadlines and overspending on building projects, Congress was told that the bill for the embassy was $592 million (£312 million). The heavily guarded 42-hectare (104-acre) site — which will have a 15ft thick perimeter wall — has hundreds of workers swarming on scaffolding. Local residents are bitter that the Kuwaiti contractor has employed only foreign staff and is busing them in from a temporary camp nearby. After roughing it in Saddam’s abandoned palaces, diplomats should have every comfort in their new home. There will be impressive residences for the Ambassador and his deputy, six apartments for senior officials, and two huge office blocks for 8,000 staff to work in. There will be what is rumoured to be the biggest swimming pool in Iraq, a state-of-the-art gymnasium, a cinema, restaurants offering delicacies from favourite US food chains, tennis courts and a swish American Club for evening functions. The security measures being installed are described as extraordinary. US officials are preparing for the day when the so-called green zone, the fortified and sealed-off compound where international diplomats and Iraq’s leaders live and work, is reopened to the rest of the city’s residents, and American diplomats can retreat to their own secure area. Iraqi politicians opposed to the US presence protest that the scale of the project suggests that America retains long-term ambitions here. The International Crisis Group, a think-tank, said the embassy’s size “is seen by Iraqis as an indication of who actually exercises power in their country”. A

Before the war it was 2.6 million Christians United for Israel - mobilising US Christians for Israel by Shmuel Rosner, Haaretz 6 May 2006 SAN ANTONIO, Texas - In the courtyard of Pastor John Hagee's church, there is a wall of hewn stones on which is inscribed the well-known verse from Psalms: "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee" (122:6). On a warm cloudy day in the short spring that precedes the Texan summer of scorching, oppressive heat, Hagee affectionately caresses his wall, its cool stones, which he imported specially from Jerusalem, and the white slips of paper that members of his congregation have inserted in its cracks, slips bearing prayers and special requests. He prays for the peace of Jerusalem, he tells me, because he knows Israel's citizens are tired of war. Millions of people will join him in his prayers: the18,000 members of his Cornerstone Church in suburban San Antonio and the millions who have read his 10 books or have been exposed to his sermons and messages through his radio and television stations and publishing house. No matter what you may think of John Hagee, one salient fact cannot be denied: He has a large following. Through his speeches, religious faith and organizational skills, which should not be underestimated, he has created a magnificent evangelical industry and he has plans for further expansion. Hagee is now working to help Israel's Jews. His new project, on which he will spend many hours and many days, has one goal: mobilization of American support for Israel. Support without any restrictions, conditions, qualifications or apologies. He is harnessing all his powers for this project and, on July 18, he intends to go to Washington with the team of activists his assistant Steve Sorensen, whose office is located next door to the church, is presently gathering to serve as regional, state and municipal coordinators. Each district in America will have its own coordinator who will recruit activists, supervise activities, maintain contact with elected officials and, wherever necessary, remind them of the first rule of politics: If you want to be elected, you must obey the will of the people. All those who have written about his new organization, Christians United for Israel (CUFI), have compared it to the pro-Israel lobby in the United States, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), and the two bodies are similar. CUFI is based on a simple assumption, rooted in the reality of American politics: Elected officials never stop campaigning and so are in need of a constant flow of activists, cash and local support. The support will be provided by those few individuals willing to invest their time and energy, the money by affluent citizens who use their wealth to influence causes dear to their heart. The millions upon millions of evangelical Christians who support Israel are diligent, enthusiastic and full of faith in their beliefs and they are a force that must be reckoned with. That is why elected officials will pay close attention to what he says and what they will hear will be incredibly simple: Vote for Israel, support Israel.

“EUROPEAN COMMISSION AVOIDED TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR HUMAN HEALTH” SAY SCIENTISTS FOLLOWING DETAILED STUDY OF EU DIRECTIVE - ALLIANCE FOR NATURAL HEALTH PRESS RELEASE - 4 May 2006 In The Precautionary Principle: A Critique in the Context of the EU Food Supplements (FS) Directive, appearing in this month’s Environmental Liability journal, 1 Dr. Jaap C. Hanekamp of the HAN Foundation provides a profound scientific and legal critique of the EU Food Supplements Directive. 2 He concludes that, in the Directive, the European Commission avoided taking responsibility for health of European citizens. The article is the first result of an independent scientific screening of the Directive from the perspectives of toxicology (Prof. Dr. A. Bast, Maastricht University) and risk assessment and risk management (Dr. J. C. Hanekamp). The 10-months study, which was sponsored by International Nutritional Company (INC), is of growing relevancy now that the EU Commission, EFSA and stakeholders are making efforts to fill in the blanks in the FS Directive. The setting of maximum levels is hotly debated and by July 2007, the Commission is bound to explain how it plans to regulate micronutrients other than vitamins and minerals. The main study of both Dr. Hanekamp and prof. Bast has been accepted for publication in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition. The Directive, so contends Hanekamp in this first publication, is a solid example of how regulators have become increasingly preoccupied with managing their own political and professional risks and personal reputation. This so called secondary risk management creates a regulatory culture that, in the case of European food supplements policies, engenders a lopsided focus on presumed risks of excess toxicity, while simultaneously lecturing Europeans to ‘eat a varied and healthy diet’. According to Hanekamp, the dietary habits of individual citizens have a far greater impact on health than the regulators’ efforts to manage presumed risks of micronutrient intoxication. Whether looked at from the viewpoint of the classic micronutrient deficiencies or from the perspective of newly emerging healthy lifespan or optimum health concepts, micronutrient deficiencies pose an infinitely greater risk than intoxication. Yet, against the backdrops of the all too common bias for negative information about possible health risks of products and activities, regulators can readily, easily and sharply profile “intoxication as a result of food supplements intake” as a target for regulation. Indeed, the dietary and lifestyle issues that involve nutritional deficiencies are beyond their regulatory reach, because regulators are not in a position to set rules and regulations that interfere with the individual dietary habits of European citizens. This most fundamentally misdirects the Directive. INC’s chairman Bert Schwitters underlines how “the article expounds how the Directive’s implicit recourse to precaution seriously pre-empts market-participation by innovative economic parties. The European Commission’s precautionary stance entails an unremitting assessment of increasing numbers of micronutrients that have already come or will come to market. This will obstruct a level-playing field, and will deprive economic parties from their rights to freely enter the European market. Since the precautionary principle does not require a sound scientific basis to ban or remove a certain product and excludes recourse, market participants’ financial and scientific endeavours are constantly at risk.” In a reaction to the publication, the director of the Alliance for Natural Health, Robert Verkerk PhD, comments: “Advocate General Geelhoed and subsequently the European Court of Justice have shown up some of the glaring shortcomings of the first part of the regulatory framework developed by the EU for food supplements. But these problems will pale into insignificance when future parts of the framework are turned into law – unless we see a fundamental sea change in the EU’s approach to food supplement regulation. The new system must take into account health promotion, as well as a scientifically and legally rational approach to consumer safety and harmonisation. Dr Hanekamp’s first study provides us with an important milestone which we hope will help trigger this sea change. Journals 'regularly publish fraudulent research' - David Batty - Guardian Unlimited, May 3, 2006 Fraudulent research regularly appears in the 30,000 scientific journals published worldwide, a former editor of the British Medical Journal (BMJ) said today. Even when journals discover that published research is fabricated or falsified they rarely retract the findings, according to Richard Smith, who was also chief executive of the BMJ publishing group. The Federal Communications Commission voted unanimously to levy what likely will amount to wiretapping taxes on companies, municipalities and universities, saying it would create an incentive for them to keep costs down and that it was necessary to fight the war on terror. Universities have estimated their cost to be about $7 billion. "The first obligation is... the safety of the people," said FCC Commissioner Michael Copps, a Democrat. Former Spy Chief: Israel Can Stand Up to Iran - Jared Shelly, Jewish Exponent Israel possesses the intelligence and capability to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons, according to Efraim Halevy, who served as the head of Israel's intelligence agency, the Mossad, from 1998-2002. Efraim Halevy "You must assume that we know more than probably many people think we know," said Halevy, who spoke Monday to about 100 people at the law offices of Ballard Spahr in Center City. The former spy chief spoke as part of the Bob Guzzardi lecture series, sponsored by the Middle East Forum, an organization dedicated to helping the United States define its interests in the region. Referring to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Halevy promptly insisted that Americans "believe every word that [he] is saying. He really wants to destroy the State of Israel." Even with such a harsh reality, Halevy remained optimistic that Iran will not simply "wipe Israel off the map," as Ahmadinejad has indeed threatened. "Basic logic - he can never succeed. The existence of the State of Israel is not in question," he assured. "Israel has a variety of means to ensure its safety." Although China and Russia - which have technology and arms relationships with Iran - have publicly opposed sanctions or military action against the country, Halevy believes that the two nations will eventually give in to American pressure. "They will give the U. S. a hard time, but in the final analysis, I don't think they're going to confront the United States on this issue," he claimed. The U. N. good news about green tea, which can also reduce the risks of women
getting type 2 diabetes, according to a new study. The results were very dose dependent – in other words, the more green tea that was drunk, so the chances of developing diabetes fell. These findings were based on a survey of 17,413 healthy Japanese adults aged between 40 and 65. Strangely, green tea’s protective effects were not found in the men – but this may be because men drink more cola than tea, the researchers speculate. The research team believe that green tea’s magical ingredient is none other than caffeine, and the men get theirs from cola drinks. If that’s so, why has diabetes reached epidemic levels in the West, which also drinks vast quantities of coffee, tea and caffeine-soaked cola drinks? DRUGS APPROVAL: He who pays the piper. . . Before a drug is released into the very lucrative American market, it has to be approved by the drug advisory committee of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), America’s drug regulator. But it’s far from being a fair and impartial jury. Most members of the committee have some link to a drug company, and a new study has discovered that this has affected their voting. In 73 per cent of the 221 meetings analysed by researchers, at least one advisory member or consultant had one or more conflicts of interest. Had the consultants revealed their conflict of interest, and so abstained from voting, the votes in favour of a drug being approved would have been less emphatic, and in two cases of the COX-2 drugs, the products would have been rejected. The most common conflicts of interest were consulting arrangements, contracts or grants. In nearly a quarter of all cases, consultants were earning more than $100,000 from a drug company. Even if a conflict of interest didn’t apply, those with ties to drug companies were more likely to vote in favour of a new drug, as they were generally ‘pro industry’. The influence of the pharmaceutical industry goes beyond even the FDA decision makers. Increasingly, they are also sponsoring ‘patient groups’ who are paid to speak before FDA committees in support of a drug. Mofaz also said that Israel has a “great interest in shaping the Middle East the day after a war.” According to Bennet, that same month, Efraim Halevy, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s National Security Advisor and former Chief of Israel’s spy agency, Mossad, said, “We have hopes of great stability, greater enhanced confidence from the Persian Gulf to the Atlantic shores of Morocco.” Halevy went on to say, “The shock waves emerging from post-Saddam Baghdad could have wide-ranging effects in Tehran, Damascus, and in Ramallah.” Please note that the U. S. did not begin the invasion of Iraq until March 20, 2003; three weeks after two of Israel’s top officials, Mofaz and Halevy, made their forward leaning remarks regarding a post-invasion Iraq and Middle East. 9-11 Lawsuits Stymied by Christopher Bollyn, American Free Press, 04/24/06 While the media plays up the significance of the government show trial of the seemingly deranged “20th hijacker” Zacharias Moussaoui, not one 9-11 victim’s lawsuit has been allowed to be heard in a trial by jury. Why have the 9-11 victims’ families not been given the same right to have their cases heard in an open trial? Ellen Mariani, who lost her husband Neil on United Air Lines (UAL) Flight 175, filed the first 9-11 wrongful death lawsuit against UAL on Dec. 20, 2001. Mariani was interviewed on national television in May 2002 by Bill O’Reilly of Fox News, who repeatedly questioned her about why she had chosen to pursue litigation instead of accepting the government fund. “I want justice,” Mariani said. “I want accountability. Who is responsible? I want the truth.” Today, Mariani, like the other 9-11 plaintiffs, is under a gag order which prevents her from speaking about her ongoing lawsuit. Likewise, thousands of employees of federal agencies like the Federal Aviation Administration have received gag orders in the mail keeping them from telling what they know about the events of 9-11. After more than four years, however, Mariani’s determined pursuit for the truth about 9-11 through the court system has failed to yield any answers or discovery about who is responsible for 9-11. Today, she is no closer to obtaining what she has stated she wanted from the beginning—a trial by jury. Why have the many victims’ cases like Mariani’s, brought by relatives of loved ones lost on 9-11, not been allowed to be heard in a trial by jury—a basic American right? And why have the foreign-owned security companies involved in the shocking security lapses, which enabled the attacks of 9-11, been granted immunity by the U. S. Congress?
