US Study Links Air Pollutants With Autism

Children with autism disorders in the San Francisco Bay Area were 50% more likely to be born in neighborhoods with high amounts of several toxic air contaminants, particularly mercury, according to a first-of-its-kind study by the California Department of Health Services.

The new findings, which surprised the researchers, suggest that a mother's exposure to industrial air pollutants while pregnant might increase her child's risk of autism, a neurological condition increasingly diagnosed in the last 10 years.

But the scientists cautioned that the link they found in the Bay Area is uncertain and that more definitive evidence would be needed before concluding that mercury or any other pollutant could trigger autism.

Beware the parent trap

Will state intervention on the back of a database of all children enhance their future or blight it?

Plans for government surveillance of the country's 12 million children (allegedly including checks on whether they eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day) provide the state with astonishing licence to intervene in the role of parents, yet many of them don't realise the severity of the situation.

Section 12 of the Children Act 2004 allows the government to create a database including every child in England under 18. The detail of what information can be collected will be specified after consultation this summer. This "children's index", linked to several other databases, will provide a complete directory from birth, including all the agencies with which children have been in contact and whether they have had an assessment as a result of concerns about their development.

US scientist accused of selling tissue samples - Deal said to earn $285,000 for vials that cost millions

MMR/Autism and Thimerosal Link - US Autism Rates Fall

Fresh controversy over the MMR vaccine may or may not be relevant but recent reports from the USA are irrefutable.

Using the government's own databases, independent researchers analyzed reports of childhood disorders including autism, before and after the removal of thimerosal. The Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons (March 10, 2006 ) reported that since thimerosal - 50% ethyl mercury - was removed from childhood vaccines, the alarming increase in reported rates of autism and other neurological disorders in children dropped by as much as 35 percent. This is fully in line with the origins of autism in the USA, Japan, UK etc. All occurred after the introduction of the whooping cough vaccine, containing thimerosal. The fact that the DPT-jab/autism link is routinely ignored, clouds the issue with regard to a possible MMR/autism link.

D. Mail 14.6.06 "LETHAL RISK FROM A-PLANT"

Cancer rates among young women living near a disused nuclear power station are 15 times higher than the UK average, a study claims. Former environment minister Michael Meacher called for an independent inquiry & urged the Govt. to delay future commitments to nuclear power until the health effects of radioactive waste are known. For the study Green Audit questioned 1,000 people living close to the Trawsfynydd nuclear power station near Blaenau Ffestiniog in N. Wales. Their results were reported on Welsh language channel S4C on 13 June.

D. Mail 22.6.06 "MEDICAL RECORDS TYPED UP ABROAD 'COULD KILL'"

Lives are being put at risk by the decision to have patients' medical notes typed abroad. A growing number of Health Service trusts are outsourcing secretarial work to countries where English is not their first language, to save money, says Unison trade union. They expose a series of blunders such as typing the word "hypertension" instead of "hypotension", which means the opposite & "urological" instead of neurological". "known malignant" instead of "non-malignant" "septic" instead of "aseptic" (not infected.)

 D. Mail 19.6.06 "WOMEN AT RISK AS 200 EPIDURAL INJECTIONS ARE BOTCHED A YEAR"

Big Pharma Research Racket Is Killing People

Over the past six years, ten FDA approved drugs have been withdrawn from the market due to deaths and injuries, leading lawmakers to accuse the FDA of not doing its job in protecting the public from unsafe drugs and to call for measures of improvement.

On June 20, 2006, the New York Times reported that “two influential senators are expected within weeks to introduce a legislative proposal that could drastically change how drugs are tested and approved in the United States.”

The Senators behind the proposal are Michael Enzi (R-Wy), chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, and Ted Kennedy (D-MA), the ranking Democrat on the committee.

“In broad terms,” the Times article by Gardner Harris explains, “the bill would require that drug makers disclose the results of all large human tests of their drugs, known as Phase 3 and Phase 4 trials; create a detailed risk management plan to uncover and control any safety problems that arise after a drug is approved; and pay penalties if they fail to follow through with this plan, according to four experts who were briefed on the proposals.”

However, while lawmakers search for ways to ensure that Big Pharma does not continue to conceal adverse reactions that surface during drug trials and to sever the ties between the nation’s public health officials and Big Pharma, the Bush administration continues to promote their cozy relationships and help drug companies escape accountability for misconduct.

The best example of the administration's efforts to protect Big Pharma was revealed recently when the FDA announced a preemption rule that would disallow lawsuits in state court against drug makers if a drug has been approved by the FDA.

Mondale backs pre-emptive missile strike

Former Vice President Walter Mondale said Friday he supports a pre- emptive U. S. strike against a North Korean missile, saying the U. S. should tell North Korea to dismantle the missile or "we are going to take it out."

"I think it would end the nuclear long-range dreams of this dangerous country," said Mondale, who was the 1984 Democratic presidential nominee and a former U. S. ambassador to Japan.

Olmert: Israeli lives worth more than Palestinian ones

Mr Olmert said last night in Caesarea: "I am deeply sorry for the residents of Gaza, but the lives, security and well-being of the residents of Sderot [the Israeli border town which has borne the brunt of Qassam attacks] is even more important. I reject the attacks on the IDF and its commanders. No one is more dedicated or more cautious, and will continue to be so in the future."

Kofi Annan, the UN secretary general, this week called on Israel to ensure its responses were "proportionate and do not put civilians at grave risk ". Almost three times as many Palestinian civilians have been killed in Gaza in the past nine days as Israeli civilians in Sderot killed by Qassam rockets in the past five years.

Fidel Castro to light Menorah (with former Mossad agent)

Cuban leader, Israeli Minister Eitan to inaugurate huge Israeli symbol in central Havana square in memory of Holocaust victims Ofer Petersburg

Cuban ruler Fidel Castro will use an official state ceremony to inaugurate Israel's symbol – the seven-branch menorah – in a central Havana square, in memory of the Jews murdered in the Holocaust.

Attending the event will be Castro's associate, Israeli Minister Rafi Eitan (Pensioners Party).

London Bomber Was Working For MI5

A noted terror expert has told the BBC that Mohammed Siddique Khan, the alleged ringleader of the 7/7 London bombings, was working for British intelligence agency MI5 as an informant at the time of the attacks.

Charles Shoebridge is a 12-year veteran detective of the London Metropolitan Police, a former graduate of the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, and now a broadcaster and writer on terrorism in the UK.

Shoebridge told the BBC Newshour program that from the evidence little else can be assumed other than that Khan was working for British intelligence.

Chinese labor laws set to tighten

Domestic pressure is driving China to introduce labor law changes that could drive some non-Chinese firms out of the country, a report said.

A bill introducing tough laws that prevent the exploitation of workers, including regulations that exceed even European standards, is heading for the Chinese People`s Congress, even as industrial unrest and wage inflation threaten the economy, the Times of London reported Monday.

The proposed law would strengthen safety and workplace inspections, force employers to consult with workers` representatives over significant job cuts and tighten the enforcement of minimum wages that already apply in provinces. It may also reduce the maximum workweek and impose higher pay rates for overtime.

Nanoparticles in sun creams can stress brain cells

Tiny grains send cells into potentially dangerous overdrive.

Tiny particles used in some sun creams have the potential to cause neurological damage, researchers in the United States have found.

The research does not necessarily imply that these microscopic grains, which are also used in consumer products such as some toothpastes and cosmetics, are harmful in the human body. But it adds to a growing body of evidence that suggests that their safety cannot be taken for granted simply because larger particles of the same substance have no ill effects.

Drugs firm blocks cheap blindness cure - Company will only seek licence for medicine that costs 100 times more

A major drug company is blocking access to a medicine that is cheaply and effectively saving thousands of people from going blind because it wants to launch a more expensive product on the market.

Ophthalmologists around the world, on their own initiative, are injecting tiny quantities of a colon cancer drug called Avastin into the eyes of patients with wet macular degeneration, a common condition of older age that can lead to severely impaired eyesight and blindness. They report remarkable success at very low cost because one phial can be split and used for dozens of patients.

The self-neutering Parliament

Forget bloody revolutions, military coups or terrorist attacks. A stealth weapon to destroy democracy is currently being deployed -- in the calm and sedate surroundings of the very cradle of that democracy -- which threatens to do the job while no-one is looking.

It is the tactic of political anaesthesia -- sending the country to sleep by a measure that sounds so unutterably tedious that the very mention of its title induces a national loss of consciousness. But when people eventually open their eyes, they may find too late that Parliament has been emasculated by the very government they elected, and that the democracy they took for granted has been all but extinguished.

People are currently transfixed by scandals over Tessa Jowell, the sale of peerages and the undermining of our once-dispassionate civil service through brazen cronyism. There is rightful concern about the damage all this is doing to the integrity of government. But while attention is concentrated on these sundry excitements, those attempting to draw attention to a measure which has the potential for destroying parliamentary democracy altogether have failed to ignite similar outrage.

Israel: More Evidence on Beach Killings Implicates IDF Palestinians Agree to Independent Inquiry

A digitally dated and time-stamped blood test report of a victim treated at a Palestinian hospital that admitted wounded from the June 9 killings on a Gaza beach suggests that the attack took place during the time period of an Israeli artillery attack, Human Rights Watch said today. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have denied responsibility for the killings, saying that although they fired six artillery shells onto the beach between 4:32 p. m. and 4:51 p. m., the fatal incident must have occurred after that.

Banks in the dock over 'rip-off' penalty fees

BANKS are being deluged by thousands of court actions a month as a consumer campaign against unfair penalty charges gains momentum.

Campaigners have called on customers to take banks to the small claims courts to get a refund of "unjust" charges - most of which are not legally enforceable, even if they are listed in the terms and conditions of an account or loan.

Banks have already paid out tens of thousands of pounds to angry customers rather than risk losing a court case - a move which could set a legal precedent and cost the banking industry millions.

Martin Lewis, the television consumer champion who created the Money Saving Expert website, described the wave of claims as "a massive revolution in favour of ordinary customers".

The Science of Soy: What Do We Really Know?

Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP) is a monthly journal of peer-reviewed research and news on the impact of the environment on human health. EHP is published by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and its content is free online at www.ehponline.org

A stroll through nearly any American grocery store or pharmacy yields ample proof of the soybean’s increasing role in the U. S. diet. Food packaging offers statements about products’ soy content and the purported associated health benefits. Products such as tofu, soy milk, soy-based infant formula, and meatless “texturized vegetable protein” burgers are widely available. Shelves of dietary supplements and nutraceuticals are stocked with isoflavones, naturally occurring estrogen-like compounds found in soy. The general impression is one of certainty that both soy and soy isoflavones deliver many health benefits, including prevention of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and osteoporosis, as well as treatment of menopausal symptoms. The science is less absolute, however, and still evolving.

Scientists see spike in kids' food allergies

The treatment for a severe allergic reaction to food has not changed much since the late 19th century -- a quick shot of epinephrine and a rush to the doctor to stave off the rapid closing of airways, brain damage and possibly death.

Medical personnel, from school nurses to chiefs of hospital pediatric departments say such near fatal allergic reactions are becoming more common in children. So three Chicago medical institutions said on Wednesday they will collaborate on an extensive study to determine the cause of the increase and will plead for more federal research funding.

"I've been treating children in the field of allergy immunology for 15 years, and in recent years I've really seen the rates of food allergy skyrocket," said Dr. Jacqueline Pongracic, head of the allergy department at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago. "Where in the past it only represented a small proportion of my practice, now more than half of the children I care for have a food allergy."

Holland moves to ban Holocaust denial

When a Dutch family comes back to Holland after eight years of living in Israel, people tend to assume its members are Jewish.

So says Leon Meijer, and he should know. Meijer, who completed his doctorate at the Technion, learned that lesson the hard way when his 11-year-old daughter was told by a classmate soon after her return: "It's a pity Hitler didn't finish the job." Meijer was shocked not only by the comment, but by the discovery that the Netherlands has no laws clearly outlawing Holocaust denial.

Now, six years later, he has drafted legislation which would do just that. Under his proposal, individuals who deny or glorify genocide with the intent to hurt others could be fined or sentenced to up to a year in jail. The law would be added to current legislation prohibiting discrimination on the grounds of race and religion.

Mearsheimer, Department of Political Science, University of Chicago and Professor Stephen M. Walt, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.[1] In this working paper, the two authors make the argument that the centerpiece for US Middle Eastern policy, especially since the Six-Day War in 1967, has been developed by the United States based primarily on its relationship with Israel. While many fellow scholars have applauded the authors for having the courage to suggest that the “Israel Lobby” might have too much power and influence in Washington DC, which it in fact does, the mainstream media has blacklisted the merits of this report by only reporting on the backlash of those who are offended by its content.

Iran is Israel’s problem

Iran is Israel’s problem. Even though the yellow journalists that make up the dead-stream media in the United States are reporting otherwise, Iran is solely Israel’s problem. Yet somehow the Iran / Israel conflict has infiltrated the minds of news editors across the United States to the degree that Iran’s nuclear ambitions, whether peaceful or not, are being reported in the United States as if the U. S. shared a border with the Islamic Republic. U. S. occupied Iraq does not constitute a shared border with Iran, although Israeli officials, working directly and indirectly through the Israel Lobby firmly rooted in the halls of Congress, have been relentless in their effort to convince the American people that it does.

A Duplicitous Referendum - Setting the Record Straight on Hamas

A June 3rd poll conducted by Near East Consulting based in Ramallah, Palestine shows that the overwhelming majority of Palestinians support the Prisoner's Agreement, an inter-factional agreement signed by one member each of Fatah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the PFLP, and the DFLP inside Israel's Hadarim prison this past May. (1) The document implicitly recognizes Israel by accepting, among other things, a Palestinian state in the lands occupied by Israel in the June 1967 war.

Beware: the new goths are coming

ONE of Britain's most senior military strategists has warned that western civilisation faces a threat on a par with the barbarian invasions that destroyed the Roman empire.

In an apocalyptic vision of security dangers, Rear Admiral Chris Parry said future migrations would be comparable to the Goths and Vandals while north African "barbary" pirates could be attacking yachts and beaches in the Mediterranean within 10 years.

Europe, including Britain, could be undermined by large immigrant groups with little allegiance to their host countries - a "reverse colonisation" as Parry described it. These groups would stay connected to their homelands by the internet and cheap flights. The idea of assimilation was becoming redundant, he said.

2-page article by Alasdair Philips. He writes on how to reduce exposure to microwaves & EMFs. Alasdair warns people not to keep switched-on mobile phones in their pocket but to keep them in a bag or briefcase. Don't keep it on a bedside table, particularly when it's re-charging. He warns that cordless landline phones emit radiation from both the base unit & handset, which is alleged to cause brain tumours, breast cnacer, DNA damage etc. He advises: instal a landline phone that plugs into the wall socket & use it for most calls. If you can't do without cordless phones buy an analogue model, as their base units emit radiaion only when the phone is active. Avoid the newer digital phones (DECTs) as their base units emit radiation 24 hours a day. He advises people to sit at least 6 ft. away from plasma screen TVs. Dr. Jonathan Fishbein's fight for medical ethics in AIDS medicine

Editor’s note: In December 2005, GNN’s Liam Scheff spoke with NIH whistleblower Dr. Jonathan Fishbein. In an exclusive interview, Fishbein discusses the controversial African AIDS drug trials he exposed, his firing and reinstatement and how medical ethics and the public trust are violated when profit and politics rule the day. – A. L.

“Science has become so severely politicized that one has to be skeptical of nearly every research result that is reported.” Says Dr. Jonathan Fishbein, once and future NIH employee.

INSIDE INCARNATION

As the debate over AIDS-drug trials at Columbia's Incarnation Children Center grows louder, a former ICC employee reveals what she saw.

Mimi Pascual gave the children drugs every day and every night, on schedule, as the doctors ordered. She shook the children awake and popped the pills into their mouths, or squirted a syringe full of ground pill and water to the back of their throats.

She and the other child-care workers made the rounds: midnight, 3 a. m., 5 a. m. Some kids took the pills by mouth, some through nasal tubes, and some through tubes jutting out of their stomachs. The children didn't like the drugs. They'd wake up vomiting or with bad diarrhea. But Mimi and the workers at Incarnation Children's Center had to follow the regimen, or they'd be fired."The drugs had side effects, everybody knew that," said Mimi. But the workers were told the drugs were saving the children's lives. After a young girl who had just gone on the drugs had a stroke and then quickly died, and another young boy who was put on thalidomide wasted away on a respirator, Mimi stopped believing that the drugs were just saving lives. She believed they were killing the children too.

Anger syndrome 'under-diagnosed'

A condition which makes people lash out violently for no reason is vastly under-diagnosed, say US researchers. As many as 16 million Americans have been affected by intermittent explosive disorder (IED) in which the sufferer displays unwarranted violent outbursts.

A study in Archives of General Psychiatry showed 4% of the US population had severe IED with three or more outbursts in the past year.

An expert said cultural differences in the UK could mean its rate was lower.

IED is clearly defined in the manual of mental disorders (DSM-IV) but no-one really knows how many people might be affected by the disorder.

Big Pharma scare tactics: How the pharmaceutical industry influences American consumers

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction, especially in this case. Lloyd Grove, a columnist for the New York Daily News, says that the pharmaceutical lobby in the United States, a group called PhRMA, actually commissioned the writing of a fiction novel designed to scare Americans into avoiding prescription drugs from Canada. The book was supposed to tell a story of terrorists who altered prescription drugs from Canada in order to kill Americans who were buying them over the internet or crossing the border to buy them at lower prices. Bizarre, huh? What an interesting tactic to try to convince people to pay sky-high prices -- monopoly prices, in fact -- for prescription drugs in the United States. But that's only part of this story.

SAD: Prozac works, but light therapy works best

Tell your doctor you have SAD (seasonal affective disorder), and he’ll probably do one of two things: if he’s of the old school, he’ll laugh, and otherwise he’ll prescribe Prozac (fluoxetine).

Prozac is a powerful antidepressant that has been associated with suicide and suicidal thoughts, especially among the young. Still, it’s effective, apparently, and it will stop you being SAD, although it may make everyone around you downright miserable. But the much better way of tackling SAD, which works faster and better than Prozac, is light therapy. Using a light box every day seems to do the trick, but make sure it’s emitting around 10,000 lux to have the full effect.

Just such a light box was tested recently against Prozac on a group of 96 SAD sufferers. Not only was it more effective, it was also far safer without any side effects. Those taking Prozac suffered agitation, sleep disturbance and palpitations, while those using light therapy reported no side effects at all.

The researchers conclude that it is ‘reasonable’ for doctors to offer either Prozac or light therapy for SAD. Now let’s see, which one shall we go for. . .(Source: American Journal of Psychiatry, 2006; 163: 805-12).

MENINGITIS: Standard treatment may be a killer

Most doctors will give a child with suspected meningitis an immediate penicillin injection before calling an ambulance. It’s almost become standard practice, and every doctor carries around penicillin shots in case of a meningitis emergency.

But it’s a practice that could kill the child, new research has discovered.

Children who are given penicillin are over seven times more likely to die than children who weren’t given the shot before getting to hospital. And those who survive are then five times more likely to suffer a serious complication.

This alarming discovery was made when researchers tracked the progress of 158 children who had been diagnosed with meningococcal disease, named after the virus that causes meningitis and septicaemia.

It’s the second research paper to suggest that children given penicillin are more likely to die – but why? There are two possible reasons: it could be that doctors are vaccinating children whose meningitis seems to be more severe, and so they were the ones more likely to die or suffer complications in any event. The second, and more worrying, possibility is that the children are reacting to the penicillin. The body may go into shock when the penicillin releases toxic compounds known as endotoxins.

These findings place an enormous ethical responsibility on the shoulders of doctors when they are faced with a case of meningitis – should they vaccinate or not? While there is growing evidence that penicillin may be doing harm, there seems very little that suggests it is doing any good. Even in cases of life-threatening meningitis, the dictum ‘first do nothing’ may become a realistic option. (Source: British Medical Journal, 2006; 332: 1295-8).

Children as young as 8 should be given Prozac if they have "moderate depression" according to the European Medicines Agency, but warns parents to look-out for 'suicidal behaviour', while they are on the drug.

In light of the recent decision to approve Prozac for children, Jerome Burne, a journalist for the Daily Mail, is looking for a case study of a child in the UK who has been prescribed and had an adverse effect to Prozac. If you know of anyone with a child who has had an adverse effect to another prescribed psychiatric drug, that may be helpful. He is working to a very tight deadline. Genetically Engineered Crops May Produce Herbicide Inside Our Intestines

Pioneer Hi-Bred's website boasts that their genetically modified (GM) Liberty Link[1] corn survives doses of Liberty herbicide, which would normally kill corn. The reason, they say, is that the herbicide becomes "inactive in the corn plant."[2] They fail to reveal, however, that after you eat the GM corn, some inactive herbicide may become reactivated inside your gut and cause a toxic reaction. In addition, a gene that was inserted into the corn might transfer into the DNA of your gut bacteria, producing long-term effects. These are just a couple of the many potential side-effects of GM crops that critics say put the public at risk.

Ritalin - The Hidden Effects...

In 1986, The International Journal of the Addictions published a very important literature review by Richard Scarnati. It was called “An Outline of Hazardous Side Effects of Ritalin (Methylphenidate)” [v. 21(7), pp. 837-841].

Scarnati listed a large number of adverse affects of Ritalin and cited published journal articles which reported each of these symptoms.

For every one of the following Ritalin effects, there is at least one confirming source in the medical literature:

Paranoid delusions · Paranoid psychosis · Hypomanic and manic symptoms, amphetamine-like psychosis · Activation of psychotic symptoms · Toxic psychosis · Visual hallucinations · Auditory hallucinations · Can surpass LSD in producing bizarre experiences · Effects pathological thought processes · Extreme withdrawal · Terrified affect · Started screaming · Aggressiveness · Insomnia · Since Ritalin is considered an amphetamine-type drug, expect amphetamine-like effects · Psychic dependence · High-abuse potential DEA Schedule II Drug · Decreased REM sleep · When used with antidepressants one may see dangerous reactions including hypertension, seizures and hypothermia · Convulsions · Brain damage may be seen with amphetamine abuse.
